The number nobody questions

Walk down the cooler aisle and you'll find a strange consensus. Celsius: 200mg. Alani Nu: 200mg. Ghost: 200mg. Bang: 300mg. Somewhere along the way, 200 became the floor rather than the ceiling — the dose you need just to be taken seriously as a “performance” drink.

More caffeine isn't more focus

Caffeine works by blocking adenosine — the molecule that accumulates in your brain across the day and produces the feeling of being tired. Block the receptors, and the tiredness signal doesn't land.

The thing is, receptor blockade isn't linear forever. Past a certain point you've occupied most of the available receptors, and additional caffeine stops buying you meaningful alertness. What it does buy you is the rest of caffeine's effects: elevated heart rate, jitteriness, that slightly wired feeling in your hands, and — for a lot of people — anxiety.

So the top end of the dose range tends to deliver diminishing returns on the thing you wanted and increasing returns on the things you didn't.

Caffeine's half-life sits somewhere around five to six hours in most healthy adults, though it varies a lot person to person. That means half of what you drank is still circulating six hours later.

Why the pairing matters more than the number

There's a second reason 130 works, and it isn't about the caffeine at all.

L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea leaves. It's the reason a cup of green tea feels different from a cup of coffee with the same caffeine content — steadier, less sharp-edged. People have been deliberately combining the two for years, and it's one of the more consistently studied combinations in the whole nootropics space.
